Ending a Project page

Best practices for wrapping up a project.

Overview

Every project comes to an end, and hopefully yours is ending sucessfully if you’ve followed this training! This section offers some advice on how you can make the most of the capital you’ve aquired during the project, and set yourself up well for future opportunities.

Client Feedback

The most important task is collecting feedback on how the project went from the client’s team and stakeholders. The big question here should be, "how did we do on goals?" While there should be no surprises here, it’s important to listen to and document their feedback. These will provide critical learnings for how you can deliver more value on future projects.

Post-mortem

In addition to client feedback, holding a post-mortem with your internal team will surface additional pieces of feedback from your team. Ask the following questions to drive participation:

  • How did we do on goals?
  • What went well?
  • What went wrong?
  • Why did it happen?
  • How can we do better next time?

Share these notes with the entire company, and make them available for future developers to read.

Sales Opportunities

Use the success of your project to your advantage, and collect sales material for the future.

Testimonials

Testimonials can be used on your website, shared on your social media, or used as references during future sales meetings. Ask client team members and stakeholders to write 3-4 sentences about a problem they had, and how you helped them solve it.

Referrals

If client stakeholders had a good experience working with you, they should be willing to refer you to friends and colleagues that may need similiar services. Don’t be afraid to reach out and ask them for a referal!

Social Media

Ask the client to post a recommendation for your work on their social media. This will give you exposure to a new audience you previously weren’t connected to.

Case studies

Adding a case study to your blog or website will allow you to showcase your work to future clients. Include any testimonials and social media recommendations you received. Highlight the unique problems you solved for this client, and how they benefitted from your work.
